God's equations

There is a theory of everything. I want to believe so. It has always been the holy grail for science, philosophy and religion. This divine trinity seeked a common objective, with their own special means. “Unification”. It is something that has intrigued some of the most eminent minds till date. It made Einstein die an unhappy man. His last years were spent in a futile effort to unify the basic forces of the physical world. Humans have sought it ever since the rise of independent thinking. By Independent thinking I mean to think about something that may seem irrelevant to you. It is like thinking about "why the apple fell down to my head!” or "Why the hell did the chicken cross the road", etc etc etc..

I love physics. It is my first love. I cannot help elaborating a bit about all this fuss on unification and physics. I love writing this part, but I will try to keep it short! I am afraid no one will read any further if I plan to go into all the details..

In simple unification is all about finding a remedy for the wired fact that we use two entirely different theories to describe the same world we live in - The theory of Relativity and the Uncertainty principle. The first is used very accurately to describe and predict the big stuff, the macro thingy, the universe, stars, the cosmos and things like that. And it did its job perfectly so far. It is simply based on the belief that “God doesn’t play dice”! Everything is according to plan and works as the equations predict.

The theory of relativity fails totally as we go into the micro level; that is as we try to understand what happens in the small stuff, the atoms, sub atoms, and at the most subatomic level. Here, it is, all chaos. “God seems to play dice there”. Nothing is as it seems. Things appear and disappear from nowhere. There is no existence, but only chances of existences. Einstein’s equations fail miserably, they doesn't make sense any more. The uncertainty principle comes for the rescue here. It describes this tiny world pretty well. Does that mean Einstein was wrong? Not really! This uncertainty theory breaks down and fails miserably when we go to a cosmic scale.

Both the theories are right and wrong in the same time. These theories describe our single world, and they are a constant fight with each other. This is not right; there should be something wrong, there should be something that we have missed Completely. If we do manage to find that something, we can have a theory! A simple, beautiful and elegant theory to describe everything imaginable in the universe. The very existence of such a theory is the source of much controversy now.

Here, at this point, we see science and philosophy coming together. Look again, the Religion, which is not at very good terms with either science or philosophy, also comes closer. They all seem to agree on the question now. They all need the same thing. But where is the answer! .. not yet.. u’ve got to wait!

A theory for everything does not have any direct impact on our lives. But, its relevance as an event horizon of human curiosity is undeniable. It brings together everything that had been at a cross roads for centuries. Scientists’ do not like philosophy as it has no theoretical support, philosophers hate religion and religion hates science as it demeans their sacred often! These altercations are very evident all around us. Strangely all of them seem to be looking for the same thing. Is it an equation as put by science? Is it a concept? Is it a person or a being like the symbols given to us by religion? They don’t seem know what it is actually.

Physicists say it is a single equation to describe the universe, so simple that it can be printed on a 'T-shirt'! Philosophers say it is something so fantastic that, it cannot be described in any simple or complex way, it is quite unfathomable by human imagination. Religion chooses to call it 'God'....

Some time back I happened to read a highly ridiculed and controversial mail by Einstein. Apparently, just a few months before his death he sent a mail to a philosopher friend of his. In that he has put forth what may be the results of his last futile attempts on the theory of unification. I wonder if he really was trying to unify the basic forces of physics, or whether he is trying to bond Science, Philosophy and Religion in an awesome 3 some! He had put in God as the”Product of Human weakness". It is a very dangerous statement. He could lose many of his religious admirers. His reputation was at stake. If it were to be said a few centuries ago he could have been be doomed for sacrilege. Why would he do that?!!.. The consequences are not that hard to imagine. No one would have dared to call him dumb for sure! May be he did not feel the need to bother answering dumb people in his final days. The matter has caused some problems in the 'higher' circles as the Internet dudes say. Though the entire content of the letter has not been made public (If only I had a few million pounds, I would gladly have spent it on this and told you guys! Seriously- Any donations will be totally appreciated!)

"Try and penetrate with our limited means the secrets of nature and you will find that, behind all the discernible laws and connections, there remains something subtle, intangible, and inexplicable. Veneration for this force beyond anything that we can comprehend is my religion. To that extent I am, in fact, religious. --Albert Einstein". Could not have agreed more. Think about it..

He calls it subtle and simple as science mentioned the ‘final equation’, intangible as the philosophers called it, and inexplicable as the Religion calls it. 'God works in mysterious ways’!! Just Venerate it.. Don’t accuse each other in its name. Don’t kill for it. Just admire and be scared, that there is something watching over... God bless..
